Today, Andrew will suport Labour MP, Toby Perkins, with his Ten Minute Rule motion to consider adopting an English National Anthem at sporting events in which England alone is competing. The English National Anthem Bill will be introduced at 12.30pm this afternoon, with the intention of allowing the people of England to sing their own national anthem.
By separating the national anthems of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, opportunities to sing 'God Save the Queen' together will be momentous occasions in which we can unite and celebrate our great union. The favoured anthem of choice is 'Jerusalem,' which has long been a favourite for English nationals.
Andrew commented:
'I am proud to be British but I am equally proud to be English, and having the chance to celebrate both identities is always brilliant. This is a great opportunity for English Members on both side of the House to put aside political ideology and unite as Englishmen and women to celebrate our national identity.
‘For the first time in the history of football, this year's European Championship will see all four kingdoms within Great Britain, in addition to the Republic of Ireland, go head to head. During this friendly rivalry, English fans can sing our own anthem in support of the team and I agree that this song should most definitely be Jerusalem.'
