Today, Andrew Rosindell M.P. was joined by local Councillor Meg Davis, to attend a ‘Care Home Open Day’ at Havering Court Nursing Home.
Havering Court was one of countless care homes across the country running an ‘Open Day’ that day, an initiative to encourage more people to visit care homes in their community.
During the Open Day, residents were treated to a garden tea - with cream teas and cakes - in the morning, followed by a staff and resident Karaoke in the afternoon. The Open Day was also an opportunity for visitors to meet the residents and learn more about their lives day-to-day.
Andrew and Meg were particularly privileged to meet Valerie Newman, a resident of Havering Court, who, in spite of her disabilities, is able to lead a full and busy life. Despite not being able to use her hands, Valerie has turned her life around, and now frequently goes out on trips to the pub or on holiday, and likes to spend her spare time writing, drawing and sewing – with her feet!
Following his visit, Andrew said:
“It’s been both fascinating and inspiring to visit Havering Court today: the staff here do such wonderful work helping the residents to lead active lives, and it’s incredible to see what some people are able to achieve in spite of such overwhelming odds.
I hope that we can encourage more people in the local area to visit their local care homes more often, and I look forward to returning to Havering Court soon.”
