On Tuesday 16th June, Year 6 pupils from St Peter’s Catholic School in Romford visited Westminster and were treated to a visit to the Houses of Parliament.
They were taken on a personalised tour which included visits to Westminster Hall, St Stephen’s Hall, Central Lobby, and finally, the House of Commons gallery to see MPs in action.
The trip was concluded with a Question & Answer session with Andrew Rosindell, in which he fielded questions about his work as an MP and what he does day-to-day in Parliament. Some pupils were surprised to know that Andrew wasn’t currently Prime Minister, while others wanted to know whether he ever brought his dog, Buster, into Parliament.
On their way to meet Andrew, the students were also lucky enough to have a chance meeting with Ed Miliband, former leader of HM Opposition and the Labour Party, outside Westminster Hall.
Following their Q&A, Andrew remarked:
“It’s great to be able to welcome local children from Romford to Westminster. At a time when many people feel disillusioned with politics, it’s vitally important that politicians engage with the next generation at a young age and teach them about how our political system works. A visit to the Palace of Westminster can be a great first step in doing that.”
