Statement from Andrew Rosindell M.P. on the Closure of the Ibis Styles Hotel for Asylum Seekers
We start the new year with some extremely good news for Romford.
I have been officially informed by the Home Office this morning that the Romford Ibis Styles Hotel will no longer serve as accommodation for asylum seekers. The hotel’s use for this purpose will cease by the end of February 2024.
This news is very reassuring for the people of Romford and there will be much relief in our town at this announcement.
The Ibis Styles Hotel was intended to be a quality hotel in the centre of Romford, open to visitors and local people. It should never have been used for the purpose of accommodating asylum seekers in the first place. However, I am glad the government have finally listened to the concerns of local people and myself and have decided to close down this facility.
Illegal immigration must be halted. Britain’s security is at stake and is risking the safety of our people. The Home Office must be robust in combatting illegal migration so that more hotels in towns across the country can be returned to the use for which they were intended.
The government have a difficult task, but have made some progress. From strategic agreements with key nations such as Albania and heightened collaboration with France, increased enforcement against illegal labour and the enactment of the Illegal Migration Act - these initiatives have delivered a drop in arrivals.
Whilst this is very welcome, there is still much more to be done in order to stop the boats and bring immigration levels down to manageable levels.
Romford voted overwhelmingly in favour of leaving the European Union in order for us to take back control of our own affairs. It is therefore paramount that this promise is upheld by securing the borders of our island home. To do this, we also need to untie our laws from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to ensure that British law is paramount and cannot be overruled by any by politically driven judges in Strasbourg. We must be able to make our own decisions for the sake of our own national interests. The Conservatives must stand up for this and be the party that upholds the security of the United Kingdom.
I look forward to visiting the Ibis Styles Hotel as soon as it is opened for public use and for the people of Romford.
