Havering Council are not closing Romford Market, as some reports have suggested. However, the Sunday Market is being considered for closure as part of the Labour and Residents Association cost saving plans.
Andrew Rosindell M.P. has issued the following statement in support of keeping Romford’s Sunday Market open:
“I would like to express my dissatisfaction at Havering Council’s proposal to close Romford’s Sunday Market. Romford has been a market town since the reign of King Henry III over 750 years ago has been at the heart of Romford’s identity for centuries!
I understand that the council is facing bankruptcy and the need to make savings across the borough, but we need to get our priorities right.
We do not want to reduce the capacity of our town centre for shopping and businesses at time when people across Romford are facing a cost-of-living crisis.
Instead of closing down the Sunday Market, I urge Havering Council to look at adopting a long-term plan to encourage more pitch-holders and shoppers to come to Romford and encourage local people to use our cherished historic Market.
Instead, they have decided to increase pitch fees and scrap free Sunday parking. This is not good for Romford.
Romford is looking as though it will suffer the most because of these cost-saving measures as cuts proposed in other areas of the borough are being rejected.
A consultation is due to be launched and I will update residents when it is and how to share your views.
In the meantime, any constituent who wishes to express their view on the proposals, should contact me so that I can speak up on their behalf and stand up for the people of Romford.”
