Andrew Rosindell M.P. has recently received a response from the Richard Holden M.P., Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Roads and Local Transport, regarding my joint letter with Cllr. Keith Prince A.M. and Cllr. Ray Morgan calling on the Government to intervene on the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (U.L.E.Z.).
In his letter, the Minister acknowledges that transport in London is devolved to the Mayor and TfL, and that it is their responsibility to manage and oversee the transport network. He also states that the Government has been clear that government grant funding cannot be used to cover the cost of implementing the proposal.
The Minister further states that the power to introduce or vary a road scheme that charges users is given to TfL under section 295 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999 (G.L.A. Act). He also notes that there is no legal requirement for the Mayor to consult government on the decision to expand the U.L.E.Z.
I am disappointed that the Government has not intervened on the expansion of the U.L.E.Z. I believe that this expansion will have a negative impact on businesses and residents in my constituency and is a symptom of the broader problem that needs addressing - the current state of London Government. I will continue to work with my constituents to ensure that their voices are heard.
