Andrew today challenged the Minister for Europe in the House on how the Britain's Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies might both take part, and be affected by, the coming referendum on Britain's membership of the EU.
He asked the Rt Hon. David Lidington, M.P., the Minister for Europe:
"The Minister will be aware that Britain’s relationship with the EU is vital to the people of Gibraltar and to the people of the Crown dependencies that trade with the EU. Will he ensure that consultations take place with the Parliaments and Governments of Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man?"
Mr Lidington replied as follows:
"We will certainly want to take account of the views of the Crown dependencies and the British overseas territories. Of course, the people of Gibraltar will, under the Bill we have brought forward, be entitled to a vote when the referendum comes."
Following his appearence in the Chamber, Andrew said:
"I'm broadly satisfied by the Minister's response. It is only right that the people of the Overeseas Territories and Crown Dependencies within the EU area are consulted as part of the Referendum, as they will undoubtedly be effected if we chose to leave."
