Andrew Rosindell has written a strongly-worded letter to the Group Principal and Chief Executive of New City College, Gerry McDonald, after reports that senior leadership at the college reduced student grades without consultation with teachers, to urge him to "reconsider this decision as a matter of urgency."
Unlike in normal years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the inability to hold examinations, students were instead given teacher-assessed grades.
In the letter, Andrew writes to Mr McDonald that the pandemic and school closures have had a "devastating impact" on students, causing disruption to their education. Yet students in Havering have seen their grades "downgraded significantly from what their teachers awarded them."
As a result, Andrew writes that he does not believe that students "have received fair or accurate results for their A Levels."
He asks the Head to confirm "what procedures took place which resulted in the downgrading of so many A Level results and what involvement the teachers had with this."
Speaking after the letter was sent, Andrew said:
"I know the deep concern students and their parents across Havering have and how unfair it seems for them to be marked differently to other students. This has left them disappointed and uncertain about their future and it is of the greatest urgency that this matter is resolved as quickly as possible."
