On 12th January 2022, I wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport, The Rt. Hon. Grant Shapps M.P. expressing my support for a station at Beam Park.
After discussions with Leader of Havering Council, Cllr. Damian White, we agreed that it is essential that the proposed station goes ahead without delay and should be given the highest consideration by the Department for Transport.
The new Beam Park station is anticipated to unlock the construction of 5,500 new homes at Beam Park and neighbouring plots, of which 1,686 will be affordable.
If they cannot be built here on brownfield land, pressure will mount to build them in the green belt where they will be much less welcome.
I would like to make clear that a decision to build the station will be popular in the whole community, and particularly among those who have already put down deposits on new homes near the station.
The economic and social benefits of this project are clear: ranging from new transport connectivity, carbon emissions cuts from more people using the railway, 5,500 new homes, land value uplift, reduced crime levels, and more jobs for my constituents.
It is absolutely vital that we make a conscious effort to regenerate and develop on brownfield sites, building much needed housing for our younger generation whilst preserving our greenfield sites in the process.
Building the station at Beam Park will show that the Department of Transport and the Government are committed to levelling up in all parts of the country and that they share my desire to revive Romford.
