In light of yesterday's Romford 'World Naked Bike Ride', Andrew Rosindell M.P. has issued the following statement condemning the event:
“I wish to express my dissatisfaction of the recent event involving the Romford ‘World Naked Bike Ride’. While I respect the right to peaceful protest and the importance of promoting road safety for cyclists, I believe that the method chosen by the organisers is not conducive to achieving their objectives and is offensive to the values and sensibilities of our community.
This is not a question of illegality, but a matter of common decency. Havering prides itself in being a place where families can enjoy the pleasantries of everyday life. So what should a parent say to their children when such a sight occupies the very epicentre of our borough!
The right to protest and the right to be heard are integral values of our democracy, but there is also a right to not engage – something which is impossible when such a vulgar act is forced upon people, in public, in our town centre. Public nudity is distressing and offensive to many residents, particularly families and children in our community. I do not believe this approach runs alongside for respect for the family values that we hold dear.
Engaging in constructive dialogue with local authorities, advocating for improved road safety measures, and collaborating with community stakeholders are far more productive approaches to achieving the beliefs they claim to espouse.
I call upon the organisers of the Romford ‘World Naked Bike Ride’ to reconsider their methods, offer an apology to my constituents who took offence, and seek alternative ways to promote cyclist safety in future.”
